4/23/77 Springfield, MA.

OK. Thing is , I had never heard the SBD of this show until recently. Sometimes that really does make a difference. The AUD copy I'd known previously as the only source, was way too crowd heavy--like the clapping and screaming was right next to you...tinny, hissysound. So i never had the patience for this show.

Ummm.....now that i've well, let's just say been privvy to, a great clean SBD, I am utterly and completely discovering anew, like i'd never heard it before, one of the most incredible Dead shows of all time.

(Yes, i know many of you are now rolling your eyes and mouthing the immortal put-down of "No Shit Sherlock" but suffice it to say I don't care. I really am hearing this show for the first time and it's beyond incredible.

It may not be the ultra-best Scarlet>Fire i've heard, but the Scarlet itself is my new automatic #1. Hands down. No contest. Holy guacamole.

The Sugaree? Off the charts good. Help (well, OK the Help sucks) but the Slipknot>Franklin's follow? Genius.

The GDTRFB>NFA killer end jam? The groove-rocking, picture perfect Bertha? Yeeeee-ikes.

Just when I thought '77 had given me all it could....."they... pull me ...back....in!!!!")

Certainly in my top 5 for '77. Maybe in my all time top 10. You can download the Shn files at GDLive http://www.gdlive.com/shn/gd77-04-23.shnf/

If you listen to nothing else, you gotta check out the well placed audience patch just after Jerry rips a hole in the fabric of space and time during Franklin's Tower.

Regarding that Franklin'sTower......
what he said....and beyond the wicked cool patch, it's an all-time Franklin's candidate as a whole.
